A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, 1884–1886
Georges Seurat
Art Institute of Chicago
Distinct technique and complex color theory define Seurat's work. Developing Pointillism is one of his most outstanding achievements, a method of shading using dots on a page. His use of color is also noteworthy in developing Divisionism, applying points of various colors that optically mix. Seurat passed away at 31. However, his brief but significant existence is celebrated by art historians and enthusiasts worldwide.
Seurat was a color scientist whose techniques deeply influenced art and technology. The Spray Can is part of that innovation. Vaporized dots of paint projected from the Spray Can create color. Artists can now create smooth gradients and complicated color effects. All thanks to an evolution in technology, technique, and color science.
